Tongass Rainforest Expedition

Our signature tour! Walk through the pristine natural environment of Tongass National Forest, the largest such wilderness in America. As you follow the shaded nature trail through the understory, you can expect to be enthralled by the majesty of the towering, centuries-old trees and the serenity of the forest. While pausing at a meadow, the naturalist guide will identify some of the more unusual plants and describe their characteristics. You will enjoy a different perspective of the wilderness from a viewing platform at nearby rapids, where bald eagles are often spotted. You will also pause farther down the trail next to a crystal-clear stream where salmon spawn each year. Here, the guide will explain some of the traditions and legends of the indigenous people that lived in the forest.

This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking. It is not available to guests with limited mobility. Guests must be able to walk over steep inclines and steps. Weather appropriate clothing including a light jacket or sweater and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour operates in all weather conditions. Tour guides carry insect repellent and bear spray. This tour covers approximately 2.4 miles of moderate hiking over natural terrain. It is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Participants must be at least four years old and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Strollers and walkers are not allowed on the trail. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Rainforest Hike and Brew

Hike through the rainforest that blankets America’s largest national forest and toast your accomplishment with a beer at a local pub. It won’t take long to reach the trailhead, yet the setting is still remote and teeming with wildlife. As you follow the challenging two-mile route, the only sounds will be those of nature until the guide pauses to comment on the indigenous flora and fauna. There will be plenty to discuss as the trail meanders through giant cedar, hemlock and spruce trees with an understory that includes a plethora of berry bushes. Following this invigorating hike, you will stop at a pub that locals often frequent and quench your thirst with a cold beer or a different beverage if you prefer.

Urban Hike and Brew

Meet with your knowledgeable guide and begin your immersive journey along Ketchikan’s steep hills and side streets, as you learn about the city’s transformation from fishing village to seedy frontier town to scenic modern port. Discover important historic and scenic highlights, including Eagle Park and its iconic carved bird of prey, the infamous former red-light district of Creek Street, City Park and the salmon spawning stream of Ketchikan Creek. Watch for salmon and salmon seekers - both human and animal - as you stroll along the creek to the salmon ladder, where thousands of fish work their way vertically up the current. Make sure to keep an eye out for Ketchikan’s historic totem poles, including the 55-foot-tall Chief Johnson totem pole, which was carved from a single red cedar log and depicts the Tlingit tribe’s legends of Fog Woman and Raven. After, stop by a nearby pub, where you can enjoy a complimentary glass of locally brewed beer before returning to your awaiting ship.

Tongass Hike & Taste of Alaska

Begin your Alaskan adventure with a scenic drive to the trailhead, as your friendly guide shares local knowledge of the history and culture of the people of Ketchikan. When you reach the trailhead, your guide will lead you on a rainforest path of natural tread and stairs where you will discover and learn about the forest’s many secrets. The trail is located inside the Tongass National Forest, the world’s largest temperate rainforest. Gaze at the giant cedar, hemlock, and spruce trees towering overhead. As you follow the challenging two-mile hike, the only sounds will be those of nature until the guide pauses to comment on the indigenous flora and fauna. From the trail it is a short ride to the Salmon Falls Resort for your Taste of Alaska lunch featuring local seafood including salmon, halibut, crab cakes, fresh salad, berry cobbler, beer or wine.
